Over 500 get Edusave awards

All Sueidahbi Sheik Nizamuddin, 13, wants is to get into the Express stream at Seng Kang Secondary School.

But despite working hard all of last year, she narrowly missed the cut-off grade required to get into the stream.

Still, her efforts were recognised. Yesterday, she got an Edusave scholarship award from Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo in a ceremony at Montfort Junior School.

'I'm very impressed with myself for getting this award. This year, I'm going to try to get into Express again,' said the third of four children.

She plans to give some of the $500 she got to her father, an HDB technical officer, and her mother, a librarian. The Secondary 2 student also plans to save some of her money.

Mr Yeo handed out 545 Edusave scholarships and merit and bursary awards to primary and secondary school students in his Bedok Reservoir-Punggol constituency in Aljunied GRC.

He also spoke about the current economic downturn, saying that many families will be hard hit in the coming months.

'It is crucial that in all these families, the children are looked after and that their educational needs are fully provided for,' he said.
