THOUSANDS of pink and blue balloons descended on the audience as two nights of singing and dancing for charity drew to a close.
ChildAid 2008 raised a record $506,000 for underprivileged children, exceeding last year's amount of $450,000. Over two nights, almost 3,200 people attended the concert.
'I have attended every ChildAid concert with my son since 2005 to support the cause of helping underprivileged children,' said one member of the audience, Madam Hannah Chua, 47, a housewife.
Madam Chua's son Samuel, seven, a Primary 1 pupil at Nanyang Primary School, also aspires to perform in ChildAid. 'I want to raise funds for other children,' he said.
ChildAid is an annual showcase of young musical talent organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times, with the National University of Singapore's Centre for the Arts as the venue and production partner.
All proceeds of the concert, held last night and Wednesday night at the University Cultural Centre, will go to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund.
'It was wonderful, full of budding talent and it warms the heart to see all these great performers,' said the guest of honour, Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence.
'I was blown away,' he said.
Other VIP guests included Singapore Press Holdings chairman Tony Tan.
