Ministry's top educator to step down

THE director-general of education, Ms Seah Jiak Choo, is retiring after 32 years of moulding young minds.

Ms Seah, 57, will be stepping down in March after a five-year term in one of the most senior positions in the Ministry of Education.

However, she will continue as an adviser.

During her long career, Ms Seah led the transformation of primary- school education with a programme which aimed to capture the attention of pupils through more stimulating teaching.

She played a key role in introducing the 'Teach Less, Learn More' approach, which encouraged teachers to engage students while building their character and preparing them for life.

She started her career as a teacher, making stops at Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College. She was also the principal of Tanjong Katong Secondary School.

As director-general of education, she oversaw the running of schools, curriculum planning and staff development, among other things.

She has received some of Singapore's top honours for her work in education. Ms Seah is a National Day Award recipient. Last year, she received the Public Administration Medal (Gold).

Ten years earlier, she received the Public Service Award (Silver). In 1991, she was honoured with the Public Service Award (Bronze).

Ms Seah said her term as director- general of education was 'fulfilling and exhilarating'.

She will be succeeded by Ms Ho Peng, 54, who is now the ministry's director of curriculum planning and development.

Ms Ho began her career as a teacher in 1979. She was the principal of Gan Eng Seng School from 1994 to 1997 and has held several senior ministry posts.

Ms Ho said she is 'deeply honoured' to take on her new role.

She said: 'MOE will continue to support school leaders and teachers, and work with parents and other stakeholders to make schooling a meaningful and transforming experience for our young.'
