Teens get the inside scoop on journalism

MORE than 100 students aspiring to be journalists stepped out of the classroom and into the newsroom yesterday to learn the ins and outs of the profession.

The teens from 12 schools were there as part of the Straits Times Media Club Camp.

The students attended talks by Straits Times staff and participated in quizzes to find out what role they would be most suited for in the newsroom at the Singapore Press Holdings building in Toa Payoh North.

The Straits Times vice-president of the editorial projects unit, Mr Peter Khoo, kicked off the day by explaining how different parts of the paper came together, giving the students an insight into the newspaper industry.

Next on the programme was associate editor Bertha Henson, who outlined to the students exactly what journalists need to be made of.

Editor of IN and Little Red Dot Serene Goh, correspondent Sujin Thomas and photojournalist Lim Wui Liang also gave the teens tips and insights into the different roles involved in the making of a newspaper.

The day ended with a presentation on RazorTV, The Straits Times' new TV service broadcast via the Internet. Deputy editor Jonathan Ng showed the students how the Net can be used to engage youth with the news.

Camp participant Nicole Banzon, 14, a Secondary 2 student from Canberra Secondary School, said: 'I learnt that you need more than just writing skills to be a journalist. You also need stamina, thick skin and to be a big kaypoh (busybody).'

Secondary 2 student Mohd Afreen, 14, from Montfort Secondary School, added: 'It helped me understand what it takes to be a journalist and how I can be a better one.'

The Straits Times Media Club Camp is held twice a year and is open to all schools which subscribe to at least 500 copies of The Straits Times, together with IN, each week.
