Oiling the wheels of education

Oxford-educated Whang Shang Ying, 47, the boss at Lam Soon, and his father know well the value of education.

Dad, Mr Whang Tar Liang, 81, had himself studied at the University of California in Berkeley in the early 1950s.

This year, the family-owned company introduced a help scheme that targets the primary and secondary school-going children of its employees.

Employees who earn less than $2,000 a month can apply for a child education subsidy. Ranging from $300 to $1,500 a year and renewable annually, it helps them cope with inflation and the rising cost of living.

An employee has to be with the company for at least three years to be eligible for the scheme. Eight employees have qualified, with 11 children benefiting. The total amount given this year was $6,100.

Mr Whang, a lawyer by training and the executive director of Lam Soon, which manufactures consumer products like cooking oil, said: 'We are putting our philosophy into practice.'

In the past 15 years, Lam Soon has been giving tertiary education grants to children of its staff, and some recipients have pursued careers in medicine and IT.

'We want our employees to be assured that certain needs are taken care of,' said Mr Whang, who is married with one child.
