MOE working to help special-needs pupil

I REFER to Madam Judy Kong's letter, 'Mother's plea: 'My son is helpless without professional help' ' (Nov 22), asking for a psychological assessment of her son, who has uneven cognitive ability.

The education of every child matters to the Ministry of Education (MOE). Schools do their best to meet the needs of pupils with special learning requirements. They work in partnership with parents or guardians and relevant professionals to identify both the pupils' skills and areas for help, before putting in place arrangements to support the pupils' identified needs. Teachers trained in special education and allied educators such as the special needs officer and full-time school counsellors are also available to help pupils make progress in their learning.

MOE is fully aware of the learning needs of Madam Kong's son. Since last year, MOE's education psychologists have been working closely with the school and its full-time school counsellor to provide the necessary support for her son. We understand Madam Kong's concern as a parent and have thus arranged for our education psychologists to meet her to share more about the support measures to help her son in the transition period when he progresses to Primary 3 next year.

We would like to assure Madam Kong we will continue to work closely with the school to monitor her son's condition, review his progress and consider the need for further assessment.

Sum Chee Wah (Ms)
Director, Education Programmes
Ministry of Education
