10 schools vying to create best tabloid

THE 10 finalists for The Straits Times National Schools Newspaper Competition are a mix of old contenders and newcomers.

Picked from a field of 22 entries to produce a four-page tabloid newspaper in just 24 hours, the finalists include Anglo Chinese School (Barker Road), Cedar Girls' Secondary School, Pei Hwa Secondary School, Jurong Secondary School, Raffles Girls' School, St Joseph's Institution, Victoria School and Yuying Secondary School.

CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School and Raffles Institution, whose teams have been in the top three since the competition was launched in 2005, are also among the finalists.

Each school will send a five-person team to the Singapore Press Holdings' News Centre to battle it out from Nov 18 to Nov 19.

Finalists will attend training conducted by Comat Training Services at the News Centre the week before, to learn how to use Microsoft Publisher, the software used during the finals.

To make it into the final 10, participating schools had to submit five copies of their schools' newspapers for judging.

A Straits Times panel picked the finalists based on the depth of stories, quality of writing and design.

For the first time, electronic publications were eligible; Cedar Girls' Secondary made it to the top 10 with its e-publication.

The team that produces the best newspaper in 24 hours will walk away with the gold award, $3,000 and a month-long internship in The Straits Times newsroom.

The team that wins the silver award will get $2,000, and the bronze-award team, $1,000.

Three teams will pick up merit awards of $500 each, and the remaining four, consolation awards of $200 each.

The competition, which seeks to get students interested in news and putting together a newspaper, is partnered by Microsoft and Comat Training Services.
