Two aliens and Doctor Ooz

Learning can be wild and fun.

Thanks to Ms May Loke, children who visit the Singapore Zoo's newest exhibit - Rainforest Kidzworld - can learn as they play.

The assistant director for education there hit upon the idea of coming up with activity books to complement the new attraction.

Rainforest Kidzworld, which opened officially last Friday, boasts many play elements such as a maze, a carousel, a dinosaur walk and a wet play area.

'The activity books allow children to record their observations and do activities like puzzles as they play in the Kidzworld,' Ms Loke, 47, said.

For example, children can ride the carousel and later, using the activity book, solve a mathematical problem about the timing of the ride.

The books are made colourful and fun through the storyline, which involves two visiting aliens who are shown around and taught by a character called Doctor Ooz.

'Through incorporating English, science and maths, we can teach children through experiential learning in subjects similar to their school syllabus,' said Ms Loke.

She worked on the activity books over six months with a team of seven teacher-authors.

The books are available in two versions, for upper and lower primary school pupils, and cost $6 at the Rainforest Kidzworld gift shop.

They also come with a teacher-parent guide.
