YOG sports go to Hwa Chong

HWA Chong International School (HCIS) students had the chance to try out several 'uncommon' sports yesterday - right at their doorstep.

Working together with the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC), HCIS invited five national sports associations (NSAs) to the school's Sports Fiesta to showcase their respective sports - handball, rowing, sailing, triathlon, and wrestling.

All five sports will be featured in the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

The NSAs first gave introductory lessons to the students, before letting them have a hands-on experience with the various sports.

Several students expressed interest.

Said Sarah Goh, 14: 'I like sailing the best because of the adrenalin rush trying to sail the boat.'

For Wong Cheng Fang and Victoria Goh, both 15, their expertise with netball drew them to handball.

'We're both in netball, so the experience helped. It was really fun and enjoyable,' said Cheng Fang.

'I can't join right now because of my O-Levels next year,' chipped in Victoria. 'But I may want to pick it up after that.'

And 15-year-old Handerson Pranoto of Indonesia felt more informed after the event.

He said: 'It was a good experience, because we were taught all these new sports.'

HCIS principal Yeong Show Chang, 45, said the Sports Fiesta, which ends today, has been a success.

'When I heard the students shouting in the wrestling hall, I knew they were having fun,' he said.

He hoped the students would want to be involved in the YOG.

His sentiments were echoed by Lee Pak Sing, director of the Culture and Education Programme for the SYOGOC.

'We hope to involve the young people, whether as sportsmen or in other capacities, in 2010,' he said. 'This is the first time we've reached out to an international school. We hope to get other non- mainstream schools, as well as community groups, to support the YOG.'

The YOG will feature 26 sports for athletes aged 14 to 18.
