Education remains priority in downturn

The Government's commitment to education will not waver even in an economic downturn.

That was the assurance given by Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng to parents at the Bishan East PCF kindergarten graduation ceremony yesterday.

Though formal education here begins at primary school, quality preschool education is important to ensure a strong foundation, said Mr Wong, who is also an MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC.

That is why the Ministry of Education will pump in over $30million next year to improve the quality of preschool education.

Speaking of the revised growth forecast of 3per cent for gross domestic product this year, Mr Wong said: 'Even though our economic and financial fundamentals remain sound and we have resources to weather the uncertainties as a country, many of us will be affected by the slowdown in one way or another.'

Despite the need for some belt-tightening, parents can still take their children to places like public libraries, the Botanic Gardens and museums to stimulate learning, he added.

He also assured Bishan East residents that those affected by the downturn and facing financial difficulty could seek help to send their children to Bishan East PCF kindergartens.

This year, the Bishan East Citizens' Consultative Committee has given out over $44,000 in bursary awards to 184 students.
